Data Center Decommission and Secaure Data disposal Slide

Methods of Secure Data Destruction for Media

Arguably the most important asset to any organization is the data contained on its IT hardware and Enterprise Storage systems. In recent years, a number of leaks and breaches in data security have highlighted the importance of management, secure handling, and secure data destruction from all Data Storage Media, be it an archive tape library, SAN or NAS storage arrays, server storage, security system data, cloud storage, end-user equipment, or any ‘loose’ media that contains sensitive information.

The McCollister’s Technical Services (MTS) team is very aware of the risks and liabilities posed by data breaches to companies and their customers and the potential penalties and loss-of-business associated with such infractions. MTS offers an array of fully customize-able onsite and offsite solutions to handle all customer requirements for secure data disposal.

Degaussing

Degaussing (Magnetic Data Wipe)

  • Process magnetic HDD’s and Data Tapes through powerful magnetic degaussing machine, eliminating data from magnetic platters and tape media.
Physical Destruction

Physical Destruction

  • Onsite Physical Destruction Methods: Onsite Shredding, Crushing, Drilling
  • HDD’s and Tapes are physical destroyed with a shredding process, breaking the units into small pieces that are unrecoverable
  • Secure Chain-of-Custody used to assure media is transported to the disposal / shredding site to insure integrity is maintained
Software Data Elimination

Software Data Elimination

  • Software overwrite for HDD’s and SSD’s compliant with the U.S. Dept. of Defense and NIST standards for 3-Pass/7-Pass software overwrites.

Degaussing (Magnetic Data Wipe):

Data Elimination Processes

  • Onsite Magnetic Degaussing service eliminates data from Tape and Magnetic Hard Disk media
  • Portable machines allow for degaussing to be competed inside Data Center
  • After degaussing, magnetic tape and HDD media is neutralized and rendered permanently unusable
  • Asset numbers and stickers assigned to ensure all magnetic storage media is accounted for in a fully-auditable process
  • Certificate of degauss issued for all media processed
  • High-efficiency equipment allows for 200+ units of media to be processed per hour
  • Hole drilled into degaussed media after process is completed for visual verification onsite
Degaussing

Degaussing (Magnetic Data Wipe) :

Degauss Standards and Compliance

  • PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry) Data Security Standard
  • NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Guidelines for Media Sanitization
  • NIST SP 800-36
  • NIST SP 800-88
  • HIPAA (Health Information Portability and Accountability Act)
  • PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act)
  • GLBA (Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act)
  • California Senate Bill 1386
  • Optional Service Level (if Required) - NSA/CSS/DoD Top Secret

Physical Media Destruction (Onsite):

Media and Processes

  • Onsite physical shredding available for HDD/SSD of 3.5" form-factor and smaller and all Cassette Tape Media
  • Onsite physical impairment (hole-drilling / bending) and full shredding service, to permanently destroy Tape, HDD and SSD media
  • Offsite certified green disposal with certificate of destruction/disposal
  • Chain of custody procedure tracks and accounts for all assets sent for disposal
  • Media is permanently destroyed and unrecoverable
  • Multiple layers of physical destruction available
Physical Media Destruction

Example Case Studies for Data Destruction

Process Flow for Specific Engagements

Case #1: "Hard Disks Failed and/or Retired Inside Data Center and Currently being Stockpiled"

Solution: McCollister’s deploys onsite portable degaussing equipment and onsite portable shredding equipment. Trained and Experienced McCollister’s Technicians provide Inventory Service, Degauss Media and Shred Media Onsite. McCollister’s truck then transports E-Waste to a Certified E-Waste disposal company for Incineration and Final Disposal, including Certificates of Degauss and Destruction.

Case #2: "Data Center Decommission and Equipment Disposal/Re-Sale. US D.o.D. Compliant Software Data Wipe Required"

Solution: McCollister’s deploys Onsite Portable Data Eradication machine and software. Servers and storage arrays are ‘Direct-Attached” and processed internally, and any loose Disk Drives are processed in McCollister’s Equipment. Disk Drives that fail 2X the software wipe will be degaussed and physically impaired onsite. Equipment and Disk Drives that are set for Disposal will be degaussed and physically destroyed onsite, and then transported offsite for Final Disposal. Certificates of Software Data Wipe, Degauss, and Physical Destruction included.
